Most of my childhood years were spent in Belgium and Germany.
After graduating from Guys Hospital and the Eastman Dental Institute I worked at the Eastman and London Hospital. Then I moved to Hong Kong to be involved in the creation of a new, the only, dental school in Hong Kong. Eventually, I became Director of the Prince Philip Dental Hospital before retiring from the University of Hong Kong in 2011. The following week, my task was to host an Accreditation Visitation, at the University of Western Australia and Princess Margaret Childrens Hospital so as to be able to establish, what has become, a very strong and well-regarded postgraduate course in Paediatric Dentistry.
My non-day-time job has been officiating, predominately at international shows in the various disciplines of equestrian sport. Simultaneously, I been involved with the training of equestrian officials in different countries mostly in the Asia Pacific region.
Most important experiences while at UWA
A memorable event was delivering the Occasional Address to the graduands in Winthrop Hall.
Being able to walk around the UWA campus and to enjoy the space, the plants, the buildings plus remember the stories and history of the places is a special experience.
Where did you think you would end up, when you began your career?
I never expected to become an academic, so I did not have a long-term plan, as such; my plan was simply to try to enjoy what I was doing.
What are some of your most significant achievements?
The reward has always been to share in the achievements of my students.
What has been the most interesting aspect of your career?
To realise that I have managed to stimulate and influence others to become paediatric dentists.
Where are you planning to go from here? Are there new interests you are looking to get involved in?
To continue my clinical work in the least stressful manner, so that I can enjoy doing it, while helping children to enjoy their visits to the dentist.
Plus, I plan, for as long as possible, to officiate at, and train officials for, International Equestrian events.
