The UWA Law School French Dialogues, a biannual public event featuring an interdisciplinary panel discussion on a significant contemporary legal issue.
Named in honour of the Hon. Robert French AC—former Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia and former UWA Chancellor, the French Dialogues lecture brings together leading experts to explore pressing legal and social topics.
The Hon. Robert French ACFormer Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia and former UWA Chancellor. During his time as Chancellor, he authored a report for the South Australian Parliament on the minimum age for social media and the law, which informed the development of federal legislation. His distinguished career has also included roles such as Chair of the Aboriginal Legal Service, President of the National Native Title Tribunal, and Deputy President of the Australian Competition Tribunal.
Kate Chaney MPIndependent Member for Curtin in the Australian House of Representatives. A UWA Law graduate, Kate has experience in commercial law and community legal services, and has worked in the community sector at Anglicare WA. In Parliament, she has advocated for evidence-based policymaking and has contributed to discussions on social media regulation, online harm, and emerging technologies.
Associate Professor Marilyn ("M") BrombergDeputy Head (Community and Engagement) at UWA Law School and holds valid certificates to practise law in Western Australia and Australian Federal Courts. Her research focuses on social media law, public health law, and body image regulation. She contributed research to inform the Hon. Robert French’s report and is recognised for her expertise in this area. She was also a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
