UWA Student Changemaker – Rose Kerr
Botany and conservation biology student (honours)
UWA and me
I completed my undergraduate degree at UWA last November. I studied for a Bachelor of Science with majors in botany and conservation biology. Both of these majors allowed me to explore my love of natural sciences and spend time out in the field learning practical skills. The biggest surprise of my degree was the comradery between members of the biology community. The ability to explore ideas with people who share the same passions both in and out of class is truly rewarding.
My connection to UWA also extends to where I resided during my undergrad. I spent 3 years living at St George’s college, where I found a support network that had also been home to my mother and other family members previously. Coming from Bunbury, it was an opportunity to find friends and develop academic and social networks.
Restoring our biodiversity hotspot
My honours project regards the potential application of biodegradable pots in restoration. The South West of Western Australia is a biodiversity hotspot, meaning we have a high number of endemic species but unfortunately high levels of population decline. If these pots improve plant growth, we will see decreased plastic waste and a higher rate of seedling survival in restoration projects.
People have high hopes for the pots, however there is very limited quantitative data that directly compares biodegradable pots to plastic pots in terms of plant growth and survival in adverse conditions. I am developing some scientific evidence on the topic.
A future of sustainable innovation
The most interesting aspect of my research is working with sustainable innovations. I am by no means an inventor, however I can appreciate new technology to improve both current and outdated practices. I think in the future we are going to see an increase in products for the consumer which have a reduced environmental impact. I hope that this is mirrored in industry as practices change. Biodegradable pots are one such change. I hope that in the future I can continue to work in the field of sustainability and maybe come up with some sustainable innovations of my own.
About Rose
I moved to Perth from Bunbury in 2014 and completed my undergrad degree in botany and conservation biology with particular interest in plant-animal interactions. Over summer 2016/2017 I completed the summer scholarship program at Kings Park to undertake a 12 week lead-in to my honors project that I have now commenced. I am working with biodegradable pots, and attempting to assess if they will improve restoration outcomes in the south west. I am passionate about restoration, sustainability and biodiversity.
On a personal note, I enjoy outdoor recreation, travel, language and music.
