Andrew is a Perth local who owns and operates Ruski Engineering Design, a local engineering and drafting consultancy in Perth. Having studied Computer Science and Mechanical engineering at UWA and working in the engineering space, he realised how technology was advancing at a rapid pace and would change how traditional engineering practices are performed. Having a passion for computers and technology he focused on how to combine his knowledge in both Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering to compliment each other and started his own company focusing on engineering design with an emphasis on CAD software and automisation and emerging technology such as 3D Scanning, printing and digital twins. Outside of work his interests include travelling, snowboarding, mountain biking and DIY home improvements.

Passion for innovation

My passion is helping people and creating innovative solutions to problems. I'm fortunate to have a job in engineering in which I can do both. I'm also interested in technology and how we can use it to better our lives. By staying up to date with technology and finding new ways to solve problems. Coming up with new ways innovative ways to do things is very satisfying especially when you know it is going to help people do their job safer but also more effectively.

Expanding knowledge

Working with a diverse range of people in a wide range of industries and projects. I enjoy interacting with multiple stakeholders from varied backgrounds and learning about new cultures and about their career experience as well as their life in different countries. I enjoy traveling to sites from mine sites, processing plants, factories and workshops, farms, ports to refineries. No one customer or project is the same so that keeps things interesting challenging me to always be adaptable. Being involved in engineering design and fabrication I always enjoy seeing the designs take form in the flesh and even more when I get to see it used on site.

My UWA experience

The most important aspect for my development at UWA was my dean and lecturers who helped mentor me and provided me with advice which I still remember and apply today. My final year project lecturer continued to mentor me after I left University which was valuable in the early stages of my career. My peers were also very important to my time at UWA to provide support but also form part of my professional network today. My final year thesis project allowed me to meet my first employer through working with them on my project which was part of the Dream Fit organisation a UWA affiliated charity.

How my UWA degree has helped my chosen career

My UWA degree has helped me to stand apart from the competition based on its reputation and prestige in engineering and as the top university in WA and recognition internationally. I still receive positive comments when mentioning I studied at UWA. Compared to other universities at the time of my studies UWA Engineering had a stronger focus on theory and first principles which are useful in dealing with new engineering problems which I use on a daily basis.
