Chao Wang completed his Bachelor of Mining Engineering and Master of Mineral Prospecting and Exploration degrees from the University of Science and Technology Beijing. After graduation Chao started working for Sinobo Mining Investment as a technical assistant. During that period he had the opportunity to review many technical reports and realised that the mining industry is different outside China, so he decided to go to UWA and study Mining Engineering. After graduating from UWA with his Master of Professional Engineering (Mining) in 2016, Chao joined China Minmetals Corporation, a flagship mining company in China with businesses covering the entire mining value chain. Thanks to his Chinese and Australian education background, he developed as a Team Leader and worked with colleagues from various countries. He later joined MMG Beijing head office in 2020 to support aligning site technical and operational needs to the corporate strategy, driving continuous improvement to ensure sustainable business development, and creating relationships with institutes and research firms.
Business leaders from different cultures
I work for an international mining company and liaise with business leaders from different cultures across various time zones every day. People are always eager to communicate with each other and develop harmonious relationships. However, the barriers formed by different languages and cultures are not always easy to bypass. I really enjoyed and appreciated the time I spent at UWA with faculty and students from all over the world, and I am keen to share my experience and help people cross barriers and establish solid connections.
Growth of our global business
I support and coordinate mining assets located on different continents to optimise their development plans to align with our corporate strategy and drive a culture of continuous improvement to ensure sustainable development through Value Optimisation initiatives. This work requires a significant amount of communication with business leaders and professionals from various disciplines, which is an excellent opportunity to learn new ideas and insights from these people. I am happy working with my peers and contributing my value to the growth of our global business.
UniMentor was invaluable
The faculty's support services for international students were most important during my studies at UWA. To successfully graduate, international students not only have to fulfil academic requirements but also face challenges living in a foreign country. UniMentor, is one of many invaluable programs that provide international students with guidance from senior students. I appreciate all the support I received from my mentor and was encouraged to help others. With all the support from UWA, I was able to focus on my professional and personal development.
UWA critical to my professional development
UWA offers a globally recognised Master's Degree in Mining Engineering. The well-designed courses were critical to my professional development and achievement in my role. My current position requires a comprehensive understanding of the entire value chain across the mining industry, including resource exploration, mining and mineral processing technics, SHE (safety, health and environment) management and rehabilitation, risk assessment, legal compliance, and stakeholder engagement. The courses I took at UWA covered all these aspects, which formed a concrete foundation for my knowledge structure.
