With unemployment at a ten year high, for many millennials, we are seeing job instability like never before. This uncertainty can be unsettling! Here are my three top tips for navigating the storm.
Take care of yourself
If you haven’t found employment, have lost work, or the amount of work you had pre Covid-19, you might be feeling the financial strain - it’s important to take a step back, get advice and make informed decisions about what’s best for you.
Uncertainty is stressful and it’s important you take care of your mental wellbeing. Make sure you look after yourself with the basics, maintain your social connections, get fresh air and ask for support if you need it.
Think outside the box to find your next opportunity
You didn’t score an internship or graduate role? That’s OK. There’s many ways to get your foot in the door whether you’re looking for your first job, a career change, or any paying role! There are many ways to get connected:
- Use your existing network to find connections - LinkedIn is a great tool for seeing who might be able to make introductions
- If you know someone who has an interesting role or career path, ask them for coffee - trust me, people are happy to give back and talk about themselves, and the bonus is you’ll learn a lot being curious and asking questions
- Sign up for job alerts for your dream employers
- Get involved with your community and attend industry events, and connect with the people you know through sports, alumni networks, and volunteering!
Make sure your CV is in shape
Now that you’ve made loads of connections and have a group of people who might be able to introduce you to employers or other opportunities, make sure you have an up to date, proof-read CV ready to go in pdf format in case you’re asked to pass it on. Your next opportunity is around the corner!
