UWA Sport strives to put the student at the heart of everything we do. As the custodians of a very diverse sport program, we are a vehicle for nurturing and developing different skill sets that go well beyond physical activity.

A recent program that illustrates the role sport plays in enhancing lifestyle opportunities for students is the International Water Safety course offered through Recreate. The program is subsidised through Student Services and Amenities Fee and offers a low-cost entry for international students to gain water confidence – giving them the confidence and ability to completely engage in the Western Australian beach lifestyle.

An example of how we work to develop professional and social skills occurs through the Sports Council. Student sport representatives sit on club committees, engage in meetings, are introduced to meeting and governance processes etc., all of which prepares them to be great employees and community leaders after graduation.

UWA Sport is excited to be involved in UWA's cross-campus commitment to make progress as a community and to encourage change.

UWA’s partnership with Netball WA and subsequently, West Coast Fever, was key in our decision to progress with netball as a whole of sport opportunity. Through the partnership, we connect with grassroots programs all the way through to the elite level of the sport.

UWA’s commitment to a women’s professional program is central to this partnership. The development of opportunities for elite female athletes is well overdue and UWA is leading the way in committing to female sport.

We are also excited to be contributing to West Coast Fever’s premiership challenge and are glad to see members of the Fever squad taking advantage of accessing our facilities.

The “business of sport” is an exciting and attractive area for student engagement. Our netball partnership will offer unique work placement opportunities and positive outcomes for current and future students. This goes well beyond the traditional sport science/athlete training areas and will see our students engage with industry leading professionals in business development, communications, commercial operations and more.

UWA Sport has worked diligently over the past 18 months to create and start delivering on an endorsed strategy for sport at UWA. This has provided direction for the team within UWA Sport as well as our stakeholders and students. The strategy highlights exciting commitments that will see more of the UWA community engage in programs and also touches on major facility development plans for UWA Sports Park; outlines a need for sport-based scholarships; and ensures that sport continues to be central to UWA’s vibrant environment.
