Andy graduated from UWA with a double-bachelors in Mechatronics Engineering/Indonesian in 2017. Andy was heavily involved in UWA Electric Motorsports during his studies, leading him to discover his passion for technology and appetite for challenging projects. While still a UWA student, he co-founded his first startup, Picci Technologies - a social app based on facial recognition technology. After a brief stint in engineering management consulting, Andy joined humm, a Perth-born neurotechnology company that’s bringing electrical brain stimulation mainstream. Andy is now Head of Product Development at humm in San Francisco, working to deliver their brain stimulation patch to market in 2021.

Words of wisdom

In a world where information is abundant and easy to access, the real advantage is knowing where to focus. Find something that excites you so much that it keeps you up at night, and focus on it.

From Indonesian to neurotechnology

Since graduating from UWA with a double bachelors in Mechatronics and Indonesian, I’ve dived into the world of tech and had a great deal of fun doing so. My first startup, Picci, inspired me to think big, take risks, and make a positive impact through technology. This led me to humm’s doorstep, and eventually to San Francisco, where the fun continues! UWA provided me with critical skills needed to realize this passion, and in particular, the Electric Motorsports project, where I worked with an amazing team and learnt the hard lessons needed to kick-start this journey.

Looking into the future

My passion is simply to make things that don’t exist yet. There are four industries I see as the most critical for our future; human augmentation, food security, power generation and storage, and space exploration. I intend to positively impact any or all of these.

Success through collaboration

The most interesting part of this journey has getting to know the amazing team we have at humm, and the people we work with every day as consultants, contractors and interns. I’m so lucky to be surrounded by experts in engineering, marketing, business and science, all of whom are working towards the same goal of bringing brain stimulation to the masses. I owe much of my knowledge and skills to these people, and words can’t fully express the extent of the positive impact they’ve had on my career. Where can it go from here? Who knows, but deep down, Perth is still my home, and I’d love to return permanently someday.
